“Do you know," Peter asked, "why swallows build in the eaves of houses? It is to listen to the stories.” ~ J.M. Barrie, Peter Pan

Empty House, Full Heart

I won't say much;
my heart is hurting so badly
it shies away from too many words.

The house is empty.
I've never known such empty.
I take out Maggie's pawprints
I made so long ago
and hold them to my heart
to fill the space around it.

and the love and light from all of you,
the emails
phone calls,
and all the comments here,
hold me in place,
hold me together.

I will have her back Friday,
her sweet ashes in a white box.

I will be back after then.
There are no words now.
Except I love you all.
maggie too

  1. we have friends with ashes and my mom thinks that's weird....

i think it's the most wonderful thing in the world.

what she doesn't know is that i don't want to be buried when i die....i want to be ashes, too....i hope she understands my choice to become one with the ocean when my ashes are sprinkled in the gulf...

and another band-aid for your heart

  2. angels dear, sending many angels and much love. we'll wait for the words, the words which we love.

  3. Sending you much love and comfort for your tender heart.xoxoxo

  4. I am so sorry to hear this sad news. Losing a soul mate (and our animals definitely are) is incomprehensible. I am sending much love and warmth as you begin to deal with this terrible tragedy. xx

  5. Yes, I remember coming home after my "baby girl" cat died and still expecting her to run around the corner to greet me. For weeks afterward. Hold your memories close, your love and her spirit all mingled together. And know that we are here, with our hugs and our "glue" holding you in place, together.

  6. Sending so much love to you. The ashes will help...Having them right there just helps, I've found.
Rest. Heal. Cry as needed & feel Maggie's spirit there with you always...

  7. That will give you some peace I am sure. I wish I had something better to say. I am just so sorry for the emptiness you feel...but time is a wonderful healer. xoxo

  8. ...still I weep when thinking of you and the empty house so full of the essence of Maggie.

holding you gently in my heart.

p.s. if you look on my blog, there is a calico stray who now knows about you and Maggie...she is eating in your honor. :)

  9. the photo speaks first for me soft little dogwood prints..... may you continue to find comfort in this space. and the white box (I have two)

  10. I remember visiting with you at the art show in town a year ago where I was purchased a small piece of your art and visited with you. We talked about my daughter who played basketball with your sweet niece a couple years ago. And you told me of your sweet Maggie who was old and in her last days. I'm so happy you had more days with her than we ever imagined at that time. I know you miss her and I'm so sorry for that loss. But I'm know her time with you was ever worth it.

  11. I read the comments of all your friends and find hope in the compassion of mankind. We love and it hurts.
It is so very difficult to lose a pet, may you find some comfort in your memories and continue to love even though it hurts.

  12. I am so sorry for your loss. My beloved cat, Kashi, is 21 years old now and I know our time together is limited and I can't imagine her not in my life. Sending virtual hugs.

  13. I'm so sorry. I know how hard it is. I lost my Sammy when I was 9. I sit here and cry thinking of your pain... because I know. I pray your heart finds comfort real soon.

  14. I'm so sorry! I didn't know...many positive thoughts coming your way...I would miss my Sophie terribly.

  15. i'm just now reading this and I am so sad to think about it. I'm so sorry for your loss. I know it's very difficult for you now but i pray that you find comfort soon and hold the memories dear.

  16. I still have no words. Not really. But I am sending you love. Lots and lots of love.
