“Do you know," Peter asked, "why swallows build in the eaves of houses? It is to listen to the stories.” ~ J.M. Barrie, Peter Pan

Climb, Reach, Breeeeaathe

They're only words.

Seemingly out of reach, but surprisingly not.
You just have to learn to climb trees
and when the branches get this thin,
and you know they won't support you,
you gotta reach.
Stretch.
It may be a long stretch,
you may need to hold it,
breathe it into it.
The yoga of living.
And when you get there,
what do they tell you?

sleep
hold close
breathe
grow
cry
laugh
savor
sit
ask
answer
see
look
tell the truth
work
play

It has been a year of unfurling.
2010 nears, a new word to be chosen.
This word turns out to be important.
Who'd'a thought it?
The dictionary beckons,
or books of poetry.
The New Year's word.
Waiting for me to know it when I see it.

And you?
Have you chosen?
What will your word summon for the year?
What power will you give yourself?
Strength? Forgiveness?
Movement?
Baby steps or giant strides?

I am climbing a tree
and building a nest.

The word is in that tree,
right there,
and so.
I am off.
I'll let you know when I find it.
is it a verb this year, or a noun?

  3. Can I borrow your word from 2009? Unfurling... I'm another year further away from the great depression - another milestone. I'm still unfurling - that's a good word, and coming with it, more strength, more confidence in myself, more growth.

  6. so much inspiration here.
i'm bad with words but i need one for the year. i'll have to think on it. i don't think i got very far with my word "fly" last year - still teetering on the edge.

(haha my word verification had the letters "wing" in it.)

  7. hope hope hope....that's my word for 2010 !
so simple yet so powerful !

    last year it was...see

    this year it was...focus

but due to some issues with my son, hope seemed the only word and the only prayer that fit for what's ahead of us....

  8. There are a few words swirling in my consciousness...I haven't quite decided which one shines the brightest just yet. But I am going to choose carefully and stay true to it this coming year, just as you have done so beautifully this past year. You have unfurled and continue to open your feathery wings to the sky.

  9. You know, my word last year was YES! And, I'm not sure I yessed enough, which makes it very hard to let that word go and claim another.
