“Do you know," Peter asked, "why swallows build in the eaves of houses? It is to listen to the stories.” ~ J.M. Barrie, Peter Pan

The day of small things

But that was before we looked for owls . . . and discovered the small black & white kitty (not an extra-small, he said, not a medium, and definitely not a large) . . . and climbed the spiral staircase all the way up to Katie & Robert's 3rd floor . . . and spied behind the leaves of the cherry laurel tree the empty robin's nest from this past spring. That was before he stood in the front yard & sang the blues at the top of his lungs . . . "gonna lock you in your house . . . gonna lock you in your car . . . gonna lock you on your motorcycle . . . oh YEAH! gonna lock you on your motorcycle . . . " That was before she & I discovered that neither of us like sausage or cheese enchiladas. It was before we discovered that Robert's outside thermometer must surely be wrong (78 degrees!) & agreed a new one would be the perfect Christmas gift for him . . . it was before we looked both ways before crossing the street to Mary's house. It was before the heat drove us inside, before I accidentally ordered navy beans instead of lima beans with my lunch, before they both agreed the mashed potatoes weren't nearly as good as Meemaw's. The corn was close, but the potatoes? No way.

  1. Hi Smith,

I just read though my comments and found that you leave a message to ask me to catch up with you on the tag thing after coming back from China. I am so sorry that I just got chance to dig on it.

Hope it is not too late to do on it.

Have a great time with the heat! Hee..

  3. And I was suddenly transported back to a time when my only niece and nephew were much younger and we made up a story about how Logan swallowed a tennis shoe while Rachel was reading a book.

Thanks for all you do. I made sure to leave the liquid refreshment on the table behind my desk today.

    Love you,
    Cookie

  4. Lily - Never too late! I'm glad you're back safe & sound. I was concerned re: the earthquakes.

Michelle - Yes, for THEM. But actually we had fun. Of course, these 2 go back to their parents at night & I get to recuperate! :)

Cookie - Swallowing a tennis shoe? I think you need to draw that little story!

    Love, Debi

  6. Hele - That would be very cool. I'd love to just invite everyone over & conduct a little owl-seeing tour. Yesterday, unfortunately, we didn't see any. The babies have grown up & they've spread out - it's unusual now to see them all together. But that's okay, because even one at a time is very happy-making!

  7. Hi! Wonderful reading:-) That owl is amazing! My friend lives in Kula, HI, on a road called Pueo(owl) b/c there are so many there - and wouldn't you know, when we visited last, in bright daylight, one flew right past us!

    Aloha to you.

  8. Deb - Now THAT would be cool - a road called Owl. I saw a big one (not a screech) fly by at night a few years ago & that was WONDERFUL!
These small screech owls sit still a lot but they fly by also - I've startled them out of the climbing roses more than once & always in the daylight.

  10. Mmmmmmm...mashed potatoes. I can't remember the last time I had mashed potatoes. The ultimate comfort food. I'm gonna have to make some.
These kids do keep you on your toes, don't they?
I laughed when I saw that tiny footnote about the slipcovers. You are too funny!

  12. Annie - Thanks for stopping by & thanks for the smile!

Claire - It actually was a lovely day, although it never seems to start that way. Another one is in the works today!

Jaime - Yes, the whilte slipcover is in a garbage bag, sitting in the hall. ready for a trip to the house & a spin through the washer. It was time for a cleaning anyway! And the mashed potatoes? I didn't have any either. This will make you roll your eyes, but I ordered boiled okra. Yes, you can't get much more Southern. Thank God I did, because I accidentally end up with navy beans, which I'm NOT crazy about.

Ms. Enchanted - I'm about out of ideas! Thanks for the thumbs up, though!

  15. memories...creating memories for them. isn't that wonderful? think about the stories you have told us about your mom or your childhood and then picture them 30 years down the road on their blogs talking about "the summer we met the owls, sang songs in the driveway and bought dad's christmas present in july."
i could eat mashes potatoes every day.
